Horses

Horses are four legged mammals that have been domesticated for hundreds of years. Horses have maintained an active role in many civilisations for travel, construction, haulage, battle and entertainment. In fact until about a hundred years ago horses where the main source of transport (after walking). Horses where used to power machinery in the industrial revolution, transport coal down barges on canals, build the railways and of course just to get from A-B.

Now-a-days horses are still used but more for entertainment purposes, rather than everyday necessity. Horse riding is something that almost anyone can partake in, not just the privileged and is purely for personal enjoyment. Perhaps more people would use horses as there everyday transport if cars weren’t so prolific and horses so frightened of them! There are many different options available for the new equestrian including stable and gear rental; you don’t even have to own a horse!

Horse racing is a very big sport in the UK and the Grand National is world renowned. It is also very big business with winners being able to raise grotesque amounts of money through breading (mainly using artificial insemination techniques). It is also one of the main forms of gambling in this country, bookmakers (bookies) are found in all cities and towns and also on many major high streets.
